A central feature of AYD is engaging a small group of students to create a positive learning environment for all students in their Algebra I classes. AYD has two basic components: a summer bridge experience in which the AYD concepts are introduced to students, and school-year experiences in which the concepts are reinforced.

Summer Bridge Experience

In a 3-week summer session, taught by two AYD teachers with up to 30 students, students build relationships with their peers and with their future Algebra I teacher. They learn and apply concepts related to effective effort, develop powerful two-way communication strategies, and gain expertise in key problem-solving approaches they will need during Algebra I. The program is supported by a carefully designed curriculum and protocol-driven teaching methodologies.

School Year Experience

During the school year, participants in the program gather each month to nurture crucial relationships among them and teachers, administrators, and counselors. Students activate and reflect upon what they learned in the summer bridge experience. Perhaps most importantly, AYD students continue to build confidence and strengthen aspirations for high achievement. Again, the program is fully supported with a curriculum.
