Central to the AYD program is developing the understanding that intelligence is malleable, or changeable, not fixed. Founded in powerful research from social psychology and neuroscience, students:
- Apply the concepts of effective effort, attributions, and the significance of interpersonal skills, sense of belonging, and motivation in learning
- Understand how their brains change as they learn, and apply that knowledge to challenging tasks
Both students and teachers take from the program a set of tools and strategies for using these ideas in Algebra I courses and in daily learning.
Scaffolded challenges in problem solving and proportionality as well as the use of multiple representations develop students’ confidence while connecting their learning with what they will experience in their first year of Algebra.
The AYD program builds:
Students’ academic identities
An engaged classroom culture
Critical skills for academic success
Successful academic transitions
